Israel Appoints Arye Merkel Acting Foreign Ministry Spokesman

Arye Mekel, former consul-general in New York City, has been appointed acting spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry in place of Mark Regev, who was recently shifted to the Prime Minister's Office.

Mekel, 61, is a former foreign policy adviser to prime minister Yitzhak Shamir, and served as director-general of the Israel Broadcasting Authority and as consul-general in Atlanta.

He was also director of the government media centre set up during the first two years of the second intifada (2000-2002).
