Director of Development

Temple Isaiah, a thriving Reform congregation in Lexington, Massachusetts, seeks a Director of Development to join us at an exciting time. With more than 800 households from Lexington and more than 60 communities including Lincoln, Arlington, Bedford, Cambridge, Winchester, Burlington and Waltham, Temple Isaiah is an innovative, relationship-centered congregation with a healthy endowment, a growing culture of philanthropic support among highly committed congregants, and a passion for making a difference locally and around the world.

Unique Opportunity
This is an exciting time for an experienced development professional to come aboard. Currently in the quiet phase of an aggressive endowment campaign supported by a leading fundraising consultancy, Temple Isaiah is in the midst of a “once-in-a generation” opportunity for transformational generosity, as we honor our beloved Senior Rabbi who is retiring next spring after 22 years of service to the congregation. Our Case for Support is compelling, congregational sentiment is strong, and the lead donors have already been identified and engaged.

The Director of Development will be joining at a unique moment, assuming responsibility for a carefully designed and well-planned capital campaign. The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in guiding a record-setting campaign and furthering the congregation’s vision for Temple Isaiah. Our strategic study shows tremendous interest in a major campaign, the groundwork is completed, and we are well underway. Overall Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will initially work in close partnership with the VP of Philanthropy, campaign co-chairs, committee members, and consultants, learning about the current status of the campaign, progress towards the goal, solicitations in progress, and other factors motivating congregational participation in the campaign.

Over time, responsibilities will transition from the consultants to the Director of Development, who will assume leadership of the latter stages and nurture the campaign towards a successful and exciting outcome.

Both during and after the campaign, the Director of Development will work closely with staff (Executive Director, Director of Engagement, clergy, and administrative team) and lay leadership (Vice President of Philanthropy, Philanthropy Committee, and Board of Trustees) to continue to build relationships and secure financial support through a combination of direct solicitation of congregant gifts, managing the annual fund, and designing other targeted campaigns. The selected candidate will understand the importance of focusing on congregants and helping to foster a sense of the synagogue as a meaningful part of each congregant’s life, developing meaningful relationships with congregants, enhancing congregant engagement, and impacting the overall congregant experience.

Responsibilities
This is a hands-on role for an ambitious, creative, and growth-oriented philanthropy professional who is ready and eager to plan, manage, and lead the execution of a dynamic and highly engaged synagogue’s fundraising and philanthropic activities. The successful candidate will:

• Work closely with campaign leadership and consultants to leverage the excitement and momentum of dramatic leadership gifts to engage the subsequent tiers of major giving and the public phase to round out the success of a transformative endowment campaign.
• Assume a leadership role in the overall success of the campaign, in partnership with the Senior Rabbi who will be heavily involved in outreach and congregational engagement.
• Upon successful conclusion of the campaign, continue to build on the momentum and excitement generated by partnering with the Executive Director, VP of Philanthropy, and the Philanthropy Committee, to continue developing the synagogue’s philanthropy strategy and culture.
• Create and own the longer-term congregational development plan, and execute the plan to achieve annual and long-term philanthropy goals.
• Assess congregational prospects for potential major gifts, planned gifts, and Philanthropy Committee members, develop strong personal relationships with congregants, and steward donors and potential donors.
• Prepare written proposals, gift agreements, and other documents as needed to define, secure, steward, and document major gifts.
• Manage and coordinate a cultivation and stewardship program that includes one-on-one meetings, events, regular communications and reports, and other initiatives to engage and inform prospective donors.
• Plan and execute congregational mailings for annual financial commitment and other appeals.
• Work closely with, and support clergy on their ongoing donor engagement and gift solicitations.
• Manage the gift acknowledgement process and administrative staff, ensuring timely and appropriate follow-up.
• Creatively manage and execute other philanthropy projects as opportunities arise.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• 3-5 years’ experience in fundraising with demonstrated success working directly with donors and prospective donors, ideally in a dynamic and high-potential capital campaign environment, and ready to step-up to the next level
• Proven interpersonal and relationship-building skills with a track record of working flexibly and effectively within teams, including C-suite executives
• Comfort working with a diverse congregation and multiple levels of donors
• Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
• Experience in the faith-based philanthropy sector preferred
• Strong technology proficiency, with skills including Microsoft Office and Google Drive platform. Experience with, and knowledge of database management best practices, with experience using ShulCloud preferred.

• Knowledge and understanding of Judaism and Jewish communal life strongly preferred
