Disability Awareness Program Facilitator (Independent Contractor)

Background
Gateways: Access to Jewish Education is currently looking to engage an independent contractor to facilitate and oversee the implementation of a disability awareness curriculum in schools, including facilitating lessons, coordinating featured speakers, and working with teachers and school faculty to implement programming. Through the curriculum, students will explore themes of disability and difference and work on cultivating a culture of respect and appreciation of learning, physical, and developmental differences. Students will hear from speakers with disabilities first-hand and ask questions to deepen their understanding of the lived experiences of people with disabilities. By focusing on the overall culture and mindset of the community towards difference and disability, and approaching the topics through a Jewish lens, our approach stands in contrast to traditional approaches to disability awareness and sensitivity trainings, seeking to shift understandings of what it truly means to embrace and include people with a variety of developmental variations.

Core Responsibilities (note: student activities will take place both remotely and in person in the greater Boston area; non-local candidates will be considered for work which can be done remotely)
• Implement engaging lessons and activities with elementary and middle school students on topics related to disability, embracing individual differences, diversity, and equity. Curriculum will be provided by Gateways, and facilitator will be trained by a Gateways staff member prior to implementation.
• Coordinate featured speakers who will speak about their lived experience with disability; facilitate Q&A sessions with students
• Share materials with teachers and support their implementation of lesson plans on a variety of disability-related topics

Qualifications
• Background in disability studies, and grounding in the social model of disability
• Experience (minimum 3 years) teaching children and adolescents, either in formal or informal settings; experience in Jewish education preferred
• BS/BA degree required; higher degree preferred
• Knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs, and traditions; ability to read Hebrew preferred but not required
• Strong communication skills; engaging presenter/facilitator; ability to thoughtfully facilitate student discussions and respond to student questions about complex topics

Compensation: The facilitator will be compensated for each unit implemented at a rate of $375-$450 per unit depending on the number of components in each unit.

Gateways: Access to Jewish Education exists to enable students with disabilities and diverse learning needs to succeed in Jewish educational settings and participate meaningfully in Jewish life. Over the last 15 years, Gateways has partnered with day schools, congregational and community schools and early childhood programs in the Boston region and beyond to provide special education services, expertise, and support. Gateways also operates its own independent formal and informal Jewish education programs designed for students with disabilities and special learning needs.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Required and 3-5 years of experience.
