(aka Tremont Street Shul) community:
Temple Beth Shalom of Cambridge is an independent, participatory and intergenerational Jewish community, with a range of minyanim, including egalitarian, partnership, and orthodox. We serve the local Jewish population through prayer and ritual, social gatherings, chesed, and learning. Our long-term ideal vision is to be a leading center for Judaism in Cambridge. We want to support multiple communities to the fullest extent possible, while maintaining an emphasis on being a single community.
Our community currently has approximately 200 member units. Leadership team is made up of Board of Directors, office manager, and a part-time rabbinic educator. In the near term, we expect our staff to consist of an Executive Director, a part-time administrator, and two part-time Rabbis. Lay leaders and volunteers are very active and engaged but are in need of central coordination.
POSITION TITLE: Executive Director
HOURS: full-time (40 hours/week), including 25 hours/week on-site
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Executive Director will serve as the head of TBS’s operations. The Executive Director will partner with professional staff and lay leaders to build and manage the human, financial and physical resources of the synagogue.
Specific responsibilities include supervising all employees and coordinating volunteer personnel, overseeing day-to-day operations and special events, and building community through personal relationships. Longer-term projects include supporting the community in implementing our recently-developed Strategic Plan and leading the community in executing its Building Improvement Campaign, including guiding fundraising for that Campaign, and assisting with the hiring of rabbinic staff. All of these responsibilities will be in collaboration with lay leaders, volunteers, and staff.
The Executive Director must be eager to strategize, experiment, and correct course as needed so that they and TBS can grow and flourish. They will also serve as a TBS ambassador, contributing to a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment. The Board of Directors sees itself as a partner to the Executive Director in the management of the congregation. The Executive Director will take direction from and be accountable to the President of the Congregation. This position will have a two-year contract, with renewal of the contract decided six months before the end of the contract.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations and Community:
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office, congregation, and facilities in collaboration with volunteers and staff, including overseeing private event rentals
Supervises staff members including office administrator
Coordinates and supports event planning, promotion, and execution in collaboration with volunteers for High Holidays, weekly services, learning opportunities, and other social events and programs
Coordinates and supports volunteer committees and develop volunteer pool by connecting members with appropriate places to contribute
Maintains consistent communication with our community, including maintaining synagogue website, calendar and weekly announcements as well as personal communications such as donation acknowledgments and synagogue notification of community deaths and births
Acts as general point of contact for members, volunteers and prospective members; connects individuals with local clergy, professionals and volunteers, as needed
Maintains relationships with our co-communities: Alef Bet Childcare and Minyan Tehillah
In coordination with membership committee, engages prospective and existing members and support new member on-boarding and acclimation
Builds community through consistent presence at events and through one-on-one relationships
Assists the Treasurer in preparing and implementing the shul budget
Utilizes network outside of our community to assist with larger projects.

Long-Term Growth:
Supports the community in implementing our recently developed Strategic Plan, coordinating lay committees and engaging outside consultants as necessary
Coordinates community efforts in implementing a Capital Campaign to improve and expand our building, including coordinating lay committees, managing the project, and guiding fundraising efforts together with volunteers and appropriate professionals as needed
Identifies needs and opportunities and collaborates with volunteers to create and execute plans for improving our community

Qualifications and Job Requirements:
• BA/BS required.
• Master’s degree in nonprofit management or business administration and/or experience as a manager, senior administrator, or executive director, ideally at a non-profit
• Available to be physically present at the synagogue on selected Holidays and Shabbatot, offset by time during the week

In addition, the following qualities and characteristics will be beneficial to the role and would make someone a strong candidate:
• Self-starter and creative problem solver with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently prioritize responsibilities.
• Knowledge of human resource management, with demonstrated success in managing, motivating and developing staff and volunteers
• Knowledge of computer and web-based systems and social media to support administration, events, membership and marketing
• Familiarity with Jewish rituals, customs and holiday celebrations
• Able to work successfully and respectfully with staff, congregants, and other community organizations, and to respect diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, personalities and communication styles

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:
Temple Beth Shalom offers compensation of $70,000-$85,000 (total compensation) commensurate with education and relevant experience. Vacation and other leave TBD.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree + Advanced Degree Required.
