Temple B’nai Brith of Somerville is seeking a part-time (8-10 hours a week) school director for our growing congregation’s religious school. We are an independent egalitarian and progressive synagogue with historic roots in the conservative movement. School families come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Religious school hours are Sunday mornings, 9:30 - Noon, and the B’nai Mitzvah class meets also on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00-5:45. Our school currently had 40 students in grades Kindergarten through 7th.
The ideal candidate will have a true passion for Judaism and Jewish education, excellent communication and people skills as well as organizational and administrative skills.
Primary Job responsibilities:
The director of education will be responsible for following and enhancing our current curriculum, organizing classes, hiring and supervising teachers and madrichim, and providing leadership to the educational program. The director will be required to work on site on Sundays from 8:30-12:30 and the
remaining hours can be coordinated remotely.
Administrative duties include keeping track of school registration, ordering school supplies and teaching materials and maintaining regular communication with clergy, religious school committee members, parents, teachers and synagogue office personnel. The school director is also responsible for writing a monthly newsletter article, and for preparing and managing the religious school budget with temple’s treasurer.
The school year runs from September through June, but the position requires working during July and August as well.
A bachelors or advanced degree in Judaic studies, education, or related fields is preferred. Playing a musical instrument is a plus
