CJP, Judy Mishkin, and Laura Shulman Brochstein invite you to a North Shore Poverty Simulation.
Sunday, October 14 | 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Temple Sinai
1 Community Road, Marblehead
This interactive experience is based on an acclaimed model that demonstrates the everyday challenges faced by families in financial distress.
This year, more than 180 members of the North Shore Jewish community have accessed services through CJP’s Anti-Poverty Initiative (including employment counseling, budget coaching, and assistance with accessing food, paying bills, and applying for public benefits). Many who seek help often live at or below the federal poverty level — with an average income of just $15,000 a year.
We'll come together to learn more about the realities of living in poverty and the challenges faced by so many of our neighbors.
What will you experience?
While no simulation can fully capture the reality of living on a low income, you will gain a powerful introduction to the barriers many families face. Each participant will assume the role of a person facing financial distress.
Afterward, we'll debrief with Amanda Badolato, CJP’s Director of Caring, to learn more about how we're working with our partner agencies to combat poverty in our community. Together with your thoughtful and compassionate North Shore neighbors, we'll discuss these challenges and work toward solutions.
“This was one of the most meaningful and educational programs I have experienced in a very long time. Years of literature and social action cannot provide the scope and reality of the day-to-day life as this activity [did]. It truly moved me.” | |

We hope you'll join us for this meaningful program. We welcome you to bring personal care and toiletry donations which CJP will deliver to JF&CS Family Table’s North Shore location.
This is a free event; however, registration is required as each participant will be assigned a specific role. This event is for those 18 and older.
RSVP by Tuesday, October 9. Space is limited; please register today.
A light breakfast will be served from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. The program will begin promptly at 9:30. Dietary laws will be observed.
