CJP’s deeply held, 100-year commitment to caring for the vulnerable has compelled us to establish the CJP Legal Aid Fund for Immigrants in partnership with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston — a dedicated and impactful faith-based organization working to build a more just and compassionate society. Together, we will greatly expand direct, urgently needed legal assistance to immigrants. Catholic Charities currently provides legal assistance for an estimated 1,000 people a year; this year, the need could easily quadruple.
Our Jewish faith teaches us we were “strangers in the land of Egypt”: oppressed, unwelcome, and desperate. In our 2,000 years of wandering in Asia, Africa, and Europe, we have known the pain and fear of uncertainty, of being viewed as outsiders.
In our community and beyond, immigrants, including some who have lived in our area for decades, are facing frightening new questions about their status.
