We’re lucky to live in a popular city: 45,375 people moved to Greater Boston last year, according to a 2025 Boston Foundation report. Many of them arrived just like you did, with packed boxes and absolutely no idea where to find your Jewish community. That first stretch is the hardest part, and it passes faster than you’d expect.

This guide is the starting point for anyone new to our vibrant Boston Jewish community. Whether this is your first month here or your first month back, we’re here to help you get settled, whether you’re looking for a new neighborhood or a new synagogue.

And, if you’re looking for Jewish programs, schools, camps, or communities, check out our resources on our New to Greater Boston page.

Finding your people when you’re new to Boston’s Jewish community

Do you sometimes feel like an outsider around here? Totally normal. And newcomers aren’t the only ones who experience it. A 2026 Boston Magazine report found that 43% of adults in the Boston metro area feel lonely, longtime residents included. Remember: Everyone at your first Shabbat dinner or synagogue visit was new there once too.

Here’s the good news: There are hundreds of welcoming Jewish organizations in Greater Boston. But because there are so many options, plenty of people new to Boston’s Jewish community freeze, get overwhelmed, and stay home.

So, what’s the secret?

All it takes is one great experience to begin cultivating community. Here are four habits that turn a first visit into a second one:

• Pick one event: Choose a single Shabbat dinner, lecture, concert, or film screening and commit to it.
• Say yes early: Be open to new invitations from potential friends.
• Ask for introductions: Tell a program director, neighbor, or rabbi what you’re looking for.
• Make a plan: Pick three opportunities for this month, put them on your calendar, and go.

That first visit is the toughest one. The second one is easier. We promise.

Of course, where you live helps to determine your routine, because it’s easier to make something a habit if it’s nearby. Brookline, Cambridge, and Newton are Boston’s main Jewish neighborhoods. Here’s what to know about them.

The neighborhoods to know, from Brookline to Cambridge

Jewish life in Boston is primarily spread across a few neighborhoods, each with its own character. Brookline, Newton, and Cambridge have the largest Jewish populations, with Sharon, Lexington, and the North Shore close behind. Think of it this way: Brookline is walkable, Newton is built for kids, and Cambridge runs on potlucks.

And cost matters. Beyond that, those new to Jewish community should look at convenient synagogues and kosher shops, and nearby food, classes, and camps.

Brookline: dense, walkable, and full of synagogues

Brookline is the closest thing Greater Boston has to a Jewish downtown. Coolidge Corner and Harvard Street are home to kosher bakeries, a kosher butcher, Judaica shops, and several synagogues within a short walk. Temple Ohabei Shalom, the oldest congregation in the area, sits at the heart of the neighborhood. Young Israel of Brookline ranks among the largest Orthodox synagogues in New England.

Considering moving to Brookline? Do these four things first:

• Walk Harvard Street: The butcher, the bakeries, and the Judaica shops sit within a few blocks of each other.
• If observant, map the closest synagogue: Check the walking or driving distance if you plan to regularly observe Shabbat at a synagogue.
• Visit on a Saturday: Check out the vibes on a non-work-day to get a sense of busy places: cafes, restaurants, parks, street traffic.
• Plan for the rent: Prices run high, so most newcomers start in a smaller place than they expected.

The reason many observant Jewish households choose Brookline is Shabbat; many families don’t drive on that day, so living within walking distance of a synagogue is worth paying for. A 2024 U.S. Census Bureau profile puts Brookline’s median rent at $2,835 a month. Space is what you trade for that walk, and plenty of people new to Boston’s Jewish community start in a one-bedroom here before moving elsewhere to get more space.

Newton: family life, schools, and the JCC

Newton is the center of Jewish family life in Greater Boston. JCC Greater Boston has a pool, a preschool, camps, and a jam-packed activity calendar. Jewish day schools, large Reform and Conservative congregations, and the Mayyim Hayyim community mikveh all sit within a few miles of each other.

Families settling into Newton usually look for four things first:

• Find a preschool: Jewish early childhood programs fill early, so ask about waitlists during your first month.
• Compare the schools: Day schools span denominations, and the public schools draw many Jewish families too.
• Visit the JCC: A single membership covers swim lessons, fitness, and family programming under one roof.
• Check the commute: Newton’s 13 villages differ, so test the drive or the Green Line before you sign a lease.

Many families choose Newton for the schools. Newton is home to a handful of Jewish day schools, preschools, and the JCC, which are convenient for families with young kids. But you’ll drive more (and pay more), which is why people without kids usually look across the river to Cambridge and Somerville.

Cambridge and Somerville: younger, campus-adjacent, and growing

Cambridge and Somerville have the youngest Jewish population in Greater Boston. Harvard Hillel and MIT Hillel, the Jewish centers on each campus, are where most of those young adults first connect. Their programs often welcome recent graduates and young professionals who are new to Boston’s Jewish community. Independent minyanim, Havurat Shalom in Somerville, Jewish tavern and event space Lehrhaus, and a growing set of small congregations are run by their members rather than by a rabbi on staff.

When seeking out a Jewish community, people settling in Cambridge or Somerville usually do four things first:

• Explore a local Hillel: Harvard Hillel welcomes community members to select Shabbat meals, services, and holiday celebrations. MIT Hillel primarily serves MIT students, alumni, faculty, and staff, so check with organizers about opportunities for guests.
• Find an independent minyan: These groups meet in living rooms and rented halls rather than synagogue buildings.
• Accept a potluck invitation: Friday night dinners here are hosted by people your age.
• Take on a role when offered: Someone might ask you to host, teach, or organize sooner than you expect, and it might pay off with new friends and community.

Because nobody is on staff, the work gets shared. A newcomer who shows up regularly could help to run the potluck or study circle within a year. Lexington, Sharon, and the North Shore work the same way, at a quieter pace.

Each neighborhood has its own crowd, its own price range, and its own idea of a good Friday night. The congregations inside them vary even more, and that’s the next thing to pick.

Synagogues and communities across denominations

Greater Boston has synagogues in every denomination, and you’re free to visit all of them before choosing one. Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Renewal, and Chabad congregations sit alongside independent minyanim. Anyone new to the Jewish community in Boston can walk into most of them on a Saturday morning. You don’t need a membership or an invitation to attend.

That open door is the only way to judge a place. A website tells you the denomination; the people at kiddush tell you what it’s actually like. Here’s what to try before you choose:

• Try a Reform service: Most of the service is in English, there’s often live music, and interfaith couples are a welcome part of the congregation.
• Sit in on a Conservative service: More of it is in Hebrew, the structure is traditional, and women lead services and read Torah alongside men.
• Join an Orthodox minyan: The service runs in Hebrew, men and women sit separately, and someone will probably invite you home for lunch.
• Sample a Chabad Shabbat: Nobody will ask you to join or pay membership.
• Drop into an independent minyan: There’s no rabbi on staff, so members run the service themselves.

Most congregations expect people new to Boston’s Jewish community and plan for them, with first-visit programs, newcomer Shabbat dinners, and reduced first-year rates.

Here’s the bottom line: the right congregation is the one you want to return to. Going back a second time tells you more than any comparison you could make on paper.

Programs and events for young adults and families

Social and religious organizations are where friend groups form. A 2026 eJewish Philanthropy report on our 2025 study of Greater Boston’s Jewish community found that 65% of local Jews attended a program last year. The same study found that 37% named one obstacle above all others: not knowing where to find events.

So, where do you look?

JewishBoston.com’s community calendar lists Friday night dinners, classes, holiday parties, cultural festivals, and arts events. If you want to volunteer, or to meet people in your field, the page on ways to get involved in Jewish Boston lists both. Add a few to your calendar and try them!

You can even sort by age. In your 20s or 30s, choose between trips, leadership cohorts, social and networking events, and service projects. Each one welcomes people new to Boston’s Jewish community who don’t know anyone yet.

Families have the JCC, Tot Shabbats, preschools, and summer camps to pick from, where you just might make lifelong friends.

Older adults have access to learning circles, volunteer networks, and cultural programs. Most run weekly.

With so many events and programs available throughout Boston, there’s always an opportunity to join our community.

Everyday Jewish life: kosher food and Shabbat

Shabbat and holidays are convenient opportunities to forge new connections: a predictable, recurring invitation to connect for anyone new to Boston’s Jewish community.

For kosher food, start on Harvard Street in Brookline, with its butcher, bakeries, and restaurants. The bigger supermarkets in Newton and Sharon stock large kosher sections. In Cambridge, the Harvard Hillel kosher dining hall serves lunch and dinner to the public during the school year. If you’re new to Boston’s Jewish community, the places closest to home may become the ones you return to most.

Four small steps can help you find your footing in the first month:

• Try out a Shabbat: If you enjoy celebrating in community, accept an invite to a service or dinner.
• Put the next holiday on your calendar: Find a celebration that appeals to you and make plans to go.
• Find your food stops: Scout out a kosher butcher, a bakery, and a supermarket with a kosher aisle. Even Trader Joe’s sells kosher chicken! If you’re not kosher, there are plenty of Jewish and Mediterranean-style cafes and bakeries.
• Get on one good events list: Subscribe to news from CJP and JewishBoston.com’s biweekly newsletter for relevant events and resources.

Start with dinner, groceries, and a reason to get out of the house. Over time, you’ll have familiar faces, favorite stops, and plans for next Friday.

Your first steps when you’re new to Boston’s Jewish community

Moving to a new city means figuring out everything from your commute to where you’ll spend the holidays to your favorite restaurant, grocery store, and route to work. If you’re new to Boston’s Jewish community, you don’t have to sort it all out at once.

Start close to home. If you’re observant, with a couple of synagogues try a program that interests you, and say yes to a Shabbat invitation. Ask the people you meet where they go and what they recommend. One good introduction can lead to the next.

For ideas, browse the JewishBoston.com directory, which lists synagogues by neighborhood and denomination, programs for different ages, camps, and kosher restaurants. Use it to find a few places to try.

Returning after time away? Your old synagogue may have a new rabbi, your friends may have traded Brookline for Newton, and your favorite coffee shop might be gone. Reconnect with familiar faces, but leave room for new ones. You know the area; now you get to discover what’s changed.

Frequently asked questions

Newcomers usually ask the same 10 questions in their first month. The answers below give you a first step for each one.

I’m new to Boston’s Jewish community. Where do I start?

Pick the neighborhood closest to home, explore the neighborhood on a Saturday morning, and attend one program in the area the same week. The New to Greater Boston directory lists synagogues, programs, camps, and kosher food by area. Let people know what you’re hoping to find: a volunteer opportunity, a team or club, a synagogue, or friends to celebrate Shabbat with. Then ask where they’d suggest you start.

Which Boston neighborhoods have the most Jewish life?

Most of Jewish Greater Boston lives in Brookline, Newton, and Cambridge, with Sharon, Lexington, and the North Shore close behind. Walkable Brookline is packed with synagogues and kosher food. Newton is family-focused, with the JCC, day schools, and large congregations. Cambridge and Somerville skew younger, with campus Hillels and independent minyanim, while Sharon carries a strong Orthodox and Conservative presence.

How do I find a synagogue that fits me?

You find that out by visiting, not by reading. Greater Boston has congregations in every denomination and independent minyanim, so shopping around is normal. Visit three on three different Shabbats, stay for kiddush, and introduce yourself. Anyone new to the Jewish community in Boston can ask about newcomer programs and first-year rates before joining.

Where can young adults meet people in Jewish Boston?

Young adults meet people in Jewish Boston through programs built for exactly that purpose. CJP offers young adult trips, leadership cohorts, and service projects for people in their 20s and 30s. Campus Hillels at Harvard, MIT, and Boston University welcome recent graduates, and Cambridge and Somerville minyanim fill with people under 35.

What is there for Jewish families new to the area?

Lots of temples offer Tot Shabbats and family programs that you can attend without a membership commitment, and so does the JCC. Jewish preschools in Newton and Brookline can also double as a social network. Parents who are new to Boston’s Jewish community often make their first friends at morning drop-off.

Where do I find kosher food in Greater Boston?

Kosher food in Greater Boston is easiest to find in Brookline, along Harvard Street and around Coolidge Corner. There’s a kosher butcher, bakeries, and sit-down restaurants within a few blocks. The bigger supermarkets in Newton and Sharon stock large kosher sections, and the area offers lots of kosher caterers. Cambridge offers fewer options near the campuses, and a neighbor at kiddush will point you to the best bakery.

How big is the Jewish community in Greater Boston?

The Jewish community in Greater Boston is one of the largest in the country. CJP’s 2025 Greater Boston Jewish Community Study recorded 333,100 people living in 138,200 Jewish households across the region, an 8% increase since 2015. That total includes 184,500 Jewish adults and 44,000 Jewish children. Being new to Boston’s Jewish community means joining a large community spread across dozens of neighborhoods and hundreds of organizations.

Do I need to be religious or affiliated to get involved?

No! It’s easy to meet people without a religious affiliation. Connection in Jewish Greater Boston is open to everyone, secular and observant alike. Cultural programs, volunteer networks, film festivals, learning circles, and young adult events don’t ask about your observance or your membership status. Many participants have never joined a synagogue, and many congregations welcome interfaith families and people exploring Judaism for the first time.

I moved back after years away. Where do I reconnect?

Treat a move back the same way anyone new to Boston’s Jewish community treats a first visit. The congregation you might have grown up in may have changed, and old friends may have moved, so start with one low-pressure event. Young adult programs run into your late 30s, and learning circles welcome everyone. Chances are, you’ll run into someone you know who can introduce you to more people.

What’s the easiest first step toward joining Boston’s Jewish community?

The easiest first step to join the community in Jewish Boston is to pick an event you think you’ll enjoy and commit to going. Check the New to Greater Boston directory, choose a program near you, and attend one this week. A friend makes the first visit easier, though many regulars showed up by themselves the first time, too. The coffee and cake after services is where introductions happen, and most people in the room started just like you.

The bottom line

Everyone was new here at some point, and there are so many opportunities to get connected. A recurring event, a class or workshop, or a Shabbat table is all you need to get started.
